Shinbone Alley (1971)

Here, enjoy this while it's up. John David Wilson directed it and there's not much he didn't do.

He's got quite a background in animation that is otherwise overlooked in recent years such as those Sonny & Cher animated pieces or the opening to Grease, or the Liquid TV segments, "The Specialists". His career goes back to the 40's when he was doing those silly "Animaland" cartoons for David Hand while he was toting about in England.

I do have one of his films in my 16mm collection that was a childhood fav of mine called "The Emperor's Oblong Pancake". Too bad I can't find a video of that online but here's one of the Sonny & Cher films...

Speaking of which, the version of Shinbone Alley used in the playlist came from one DVD release that was quickly made out-of-print pretty early. This version has a lot of different edits and additions I was not aware of since I was more use to seeing it a different way on older VHS releases (and a later DVD reissue used). I sorta consider this the John Wilson-approved edit of the film but who knows for sure. All I know is that I liked the idea the guy committing suicide alone without anyone bothering to call attention to it (since he left a note which starts our first tune).
