A sock full of Johnny Quest
Oh, that's some fat brass!
The expression "A sock full of Johnny Quest" is from this comic, specifically a reference to Yoko Kanno's soundtrack for "Cowboy BeBop". I thought it might be fun to share that source material.

Juanita Banana
We're going to start here. I'd prefer to have posted their TV performance, but the guy who posted it disabled embedding for some bizarre reason.

"Juanita Banana" is a novelty song co-written by Tash Howard and Murray Kenton...The original release of "Juanita Banana" was performed by The Peels, a studio group assembled by co-writer Tash Howard, who also co-produced the single. Howard also wrote "Juanita Banana Part 2" for The Peels as a follow-up release later in the same year.The song they're riffing on is Caro Nome by Verdi. Here's what it sounds like when someone who can sing sings it.
You'd be amazed how many times this song has been covered.

Bananas do not grow there. It is too cold. So cold, so bleak. Only the winter brings us peace.
I love that there's a whole genre of YouTube videos of people playing records. I also like that "Inception"\"War of the worlds" BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAM this one uses. Really grounds the piece.
Well, that's a nice trippy one. I guess they smoked the banana peels here.
There are MANY others, but this gives you a great place to start. You could collect them! If you wanted to. I don't know why you would.

Original Video of The Now Explosion produced in Atlanta, GA, in 1970, has been recovered by video archivists at the University of Georgia at Athens, GA. The marathon music-TV concept was launched in Atlanta ten years before MTV or VH1. Video segments originally broadcast in 1970 and stored in a south Florida garage for 3 1/2 decades have been remastered by the UGA archives to contemporary technical standards and obtained by the original producer, Robert Whitney. It's a bit of a miracle - but now - we've actually got some of the historic Now Explosion video, short samples of which are shown in this Fair Use archival presentation. SAMISEN!
I'm sure you all remember this series of commercials (and I apologize now for the video quality there), but did you ever think about the actual music being used?

I just wanted to get some more Yoshida Brothers in here, so you could see what it looks like when they play.
Hiromitsu Agatsuma is another contemporary artist, whom I first heard on NPR. Sadly, I think this track has a very "smooth jazz" sound to it, so I'm slightly put off. It's still some very impressive playing.
The work he's done with piano player Satoru Shionoya is more impressive.
Yoko Nagayama is serious business. Also, Mt. Fuji is more impressive when you have a Palin-do.
Slightly off-topic...I know those aren't samisen but erhu, but I just like the band and the song. Also, this needs to be the opening credits for an anime like, yesterday.
Let's start all classical on this and look at Takahashi Chikuzan. He lost his sight at around age two from measles before becoming a live-in apprentice of the Tsugaru-jamisen performer Toda Jūjirō near his home town.
If you make a Hoichi the Earless joke about this, I will hunt you down.
Screw classical, let's have some fun with it! (Oddly, this is what got me on a samisen kick in the first place.)
Hear that saxophone? That's the 80s.
I might sleep better tonight.
Finally, I leave you with this, which is not an actual samisen, but a moog imitation. It's from Tomita's cover of Holst's "The Planets" and it's a good track to close out on.
