Anime Hell Presents: The 60s Show

The next Anime Hell event in Toronto is THE 60s SHOW, 8pm January 26 at Eyesore Cinema - 1176 Bloor St West! It's $5 to get in and there will be two or more solid hours of vintage Japanese animation fun in English with subs or dubs, in color and black and white! See you there! 

R.I.P. Fred Crippen

Fred Crippen (1928-2018) Animator, Designer, Director.

Born in Michigan, he attended Michigan State and served in the Marine Corps before moving to New York City, where he worked for Shamus Culhane Productions and UPA-New York. During a layoff, Crippen earned some money by repainting the UPA studio. In 1955, he was invited to join the Burbank studio and work on The Boing-Boing Show. Crippen animated and/or directed many of the most distinctive pieces on the show, sometimes in collaboration with Ernest Pintoff, Jimmy Murakami, and John Whitney. In 1958, Crippen left UPA to form Pantomime Pictures, which created television shows and commercials for over fifty years.

A little cartoon for Labor Day

Had a nice visit with CW from NinjaHell! and his wife yesterday (Yes! We have gas in Dallas again). We got talking about some weird things, like old Disney flicks that touch on...sensitive subjects. I was reminded of this and an old reggae song, so I thought that would be perfect for Labor Day.

Juanita Banana

We're going to start here. I'd prefer to have posted their TV performance, but the guy who posted it disabled embedding for some bizarre reason.

"Juanita Banana" is a novelty song co-written by Tash Howard and Murray Kenton...The original release of "Juanita Banana" was performed by The Peels, a studio group assembled by co-writer Tash Howard, who also co-produced the single. Howard also wrote "Juanita Banana Part 2" for The Peels as a follow-up release later in the same year.

The song they're riffing on is Caro Nome by Verdi. Here's what it sounds like when someone who can sing sings it.

I love that there's a whole genre of YouTube videos of people playing records. I also like that "Inception"\"War of the worlds" BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAM this one uses. Really grounds the piece.

Gallery of Horror (1967)

Besides John Carradine, this flick also boasts Lon Cheney Jr. and Roger Gentry!

This is a hilariously bad movie. I really had some trouble getting through "The Witch's Clock", but once you crest that hump, it's smooth sailing.

Also: it's got a character named "Alucard", so there's your cheap anime connection.

One Step Beyond (1959)

Before the Twilight Zone--before The Outer Limits--there was One Step Beyond. It was a series that specialized in stories of "the uncanny".

More importantly, it gave us the title for this song:



Oh, 80s. You're so wacky. Let's try that opening theme again with the theremin.



Yeah! It's the closing credits for "Outer Limits"! Big surprise. Let's see what else they have going on.

So, I heard that new "Carrie" movie came out. How is that?

Kwaidan (1964)

This is one of the greatest horror anthology movies you are ever going to see. Oh! it's just dripping with style.

It's so chock-full of style, Akira Kurosawa did his own version of the Snow Maiden. That's a very good story, actually. We might have to come back to that.

These stories come to us from Lafcadio Hern's book, Kwaidan (go check it out!). He had a pretty amazing life.

Someone needs to do a chibi version of this, like, yesterday. We can call it "Kawaiidan".

Dibs on that gag.

Vincent and Edgar -- Sounds like a kids' book

Oh man! What a fun film. Vincent is just delightfully evil in this one and everyone puts on a strong show. There's even a little "Hopfrog" subplot thrown in, just for fun.
