Rheinhard sez, "Independent small press comic artist and classic anime collector David Merrill and wife Shaindle Minuk has a splendid little online collection of amazingly weird, surreal, or just plain awful comics from the 40s through the 70s. As they put it, 'Dave and Shain love to buy old comic books. Really stupid old comic books, with stupid covers and even worse interiors.' Currently in the spotlight is 'The Super Wizard Stardust' who saves America from the evil Fifth Column without even bending a single joint ... because the artist probably never got to the second correspondence class!"
Danno sez, "Who's Rheinhard?"

I've been to their page for the cooky comics, and I wish I had some of those in my collection! I don't have many past the 1960s personally, but it would be kinda cute to get those hokey types I've heard of.
I think I paid $20 for that FANTASTIC COMICS with the Stardust - the cover's detached and there are a few missing pages. Still, it's a bargain.
Look for Fletcher Hanks comics to skyrocket in value when the Fantagraphics book about him comes out.
I choose my comic book purchases almost SOLELY upon the "kook value".
I always head for the old coverless comics. Collectors won't go for 'em and you find some good kook stuff, too.
-d!
On an unrelated note here's CARNIVAL IN RIO with Arnold:

and it's not safe for work...

Somehow I never think about buying coverless comics at all.
Worst I have in my collection are a lot of Archies, teen romance types and some esoterical "funny animal" varieties.
Forgot to mentino earlier last week that ASIFA-Hollywood held a special screening tribute to "Kimba the White Lion" at some library.
Leftover info I picked up elsewhere....
The ASIFA event next Thursday is being presented by KIMBA's original English-language producer, Fred Ladd. He will present clips from the series and discuss its origins with animator Sadao Miyamoto (an alumnus of Tezuka's Mushi Productions), Jared Cook, translator & interpreter for Tezuka himself, Hollywood animator (and fursuiter extrodinare) Shawn Keller, and Ms. Sonia Owens, an original voice-cast member from the classic series.
Too bad I don't live in LA or I'd go to it. Those guys do great work at that ASIFA branch.
Just to bring up, that was last Thursday when that event happened, but I should've made some noise about it here for anyone that could've been in that area.
Going back to comics, the only time I ever really bought them regularly had to go back to the days when there was a small ma & pa drug store just a few blocks from my house that had a bunch of comics, and just like most kids my age, we'd waste our allouances on getting those 32-paged booklets of flinsy construction and 4-color printed inks. Nowadays I just can't get into it anymore, even for old issues unless I don't find a convenient time and place for it.
Just wanted to update and say how much I like Mister Kitty's latest peak into the exciting world of Bande Dessin du Francais!
At least those kids get got be "Albator" for Halloween or whenever! If that show had bit a US hit in the early '80s, I'd be one too!
But yeah, perhaps they should've stuck to doing what they did best (though I've read some bad reviews over the latest Asterix book).
