Hey, cool! Wonder if by any chance Chris is planning to capture Broken Film and the other Tezuka experimental shorts. My short-term memory is leakier than a sieve and as a result I've forgotten the name of the guy at AWA who had all of these on LD and was in the process of capturing them. I'm pretty sure we were talking about it over dinner and stuff.
Why do I get the feeling that it'll turn out to have been Chris himself?
I actually do have "Broken Down Film" as well, and might send that your way very soon! I otherwise have a VHS copy of the LD in question, though mine is in pretty fair shape, I can only wish I could upgrade to the DVD that came out in Japan a few years back.
I first saw both "Jumping" and "Broken Down Film" waa a decade ago from a video my local library had in it's A/V department (highlighting a dozen animation films produced between 1980-85). The quality of the films on that tape though weren't nearly as perfect as they could be, looking to be taken from duplicated 16mm copies or whatever as well as having a hissiness in the soundtrack. I eventually came across better copies from festival compilation tapes I had to order elsewhere from a defunct subsidiary of Animation Magazine.
I recently snagged the R2 DVD compilation of all of Tezuka's experimental animated shorts.
I spent some time this weekend working with a friend to put together Crazy Monkey Hell: Volume 1, collecting a bunch of clips from assorted DVDs into one handy volume. Thanks to the inevitable technical snags, the final disc hasn't been burned yet, but I'm hoping to have a copy in hand in time to upload to Gaav for this weekend's Hell.
Inexplicably, I forgot to bring the Tezuka disc with me when stuff was being ripped, but rest assured choice bits will be available on CMH Vol. 2...whenever that actually makes it out the door. In particular, I'm hoping to get at least one of the shorts subtitled. We'll see what actually winds up happening.
I forget some of the titles of the shorts and don't have the disc handy, but I believe it's "Memory". It's one of the earlier shorts that has people with very simple stop-motion animated photographs for heads, with the guy checking out the ladies before falling into the inevitable pit of despair. It's pretty amusing as is, but there's enough dialogue in it that I'm hoping to con someone in to translating it for me.
Oh yes, I've heard of that one, though I only saw a clip of it elsewhere that involved an alien telling others about the earthlings or whatever, and somehow toilets were involved in the whimsical piece.
Sad to hear it's gone now. I'd love to put it up elsewhere myself, but I wan't to keep a low-profile about those things, as I don't want to get into any hot water with whomever hosts this file temporarily.
I'll have to get around to doing 'Broken Down Film" soon!
