The Oni-Con Spook Show Report

Where to start?

First, let me say the Oni-Con AV crew was great. They had the cables wrangled and the set-up ready for me to plug and pray. And despite that we still had gremlins in the works. An over sensitive SVideo connector gave us the blue screen of no signal from the start. Between roving mic-monkey Bruce Lewis and Video Programming Director Mike Unfried we lost the video feed a few more times over the course of the night. So the AnimeHELL tradition of video snafu was upheld.

The night before the show I found out that HELL had only been scheduled for one hour. I didn't want to drive 4 plus hours to Houston just to put on a one hour show. Thankfully, the OtakuHELL color commentator Bruce Lewis intervened and was able to get the Oni-Con powers that be to expand the show to 3 hours. Unfortunately nobody told the Red Vs. Blue guys who were scheduled to be in Video Room 1 at 8pm, but were moved to Video Room 2. It could've turned into a french farce, but didn't. The Rooster Teeth folks showed up, found the HELL spook show and after hanging around for a while gave their Red Vs. Blue DVD to some fans and disappeared into the Houston night. We did direct the R vs. B entourage into Video Room 2 where the DVD was shown without a hitch, and I apologized to the Rooster Teeth guys Sunday morning and bought a couple of their DVDs to make up for it.

The show was great. With Bruce Lewis on the mic I started the show with some scary movie trailers and some intermission shorts. I'll have to check the tape to see what played next, but I remember showing the Gobelins short SUPER TIBETAN RACER followed by the transforming robot C-4 commercial and following it up with the SPEED RACER THEME. From there it's all a blur. There was a lot of new clips, ATTACK OF THE SUPER MONSTERS, TOMB OF DRACULA, IT ONLY TAKES A SECOND, LIFE IS FOR LIVING, CORY HAIM ME MYSELF AND I, and the horror kept coming. And of course there was the crowd pleasing FORKLIFT DRIVER KLAUS, and NINJA SQUAD for some retro 80s pain. The Betty Boop cartoon MINNIE THE MOOCHER wasn't as well recieved as I'd hoped, maybe I need to trim it down for the next show...

All in all I had a great time, and I hope everybody enjoyed the show. I hope we can come back and do it again at next year's Oni-Con.

Skip at AVGeeks was torrenting VD ATTACK PLAN awhile ago. I'll look if it's still up, if not I'll see what I can do.

Love to see "VD Attack Plan". Nice if it compliments another Disney sex. ed film for girls, "The Story of Mensturation".

Love seeing you've played "Speed Tibetan Racer" as well. I've seen this film already, those guys at the Gobelins (I like to think of them as the French CalArts) place are doing great stuff.

I sometimes show Story of Mensturation, and the TRUE LIFE ADVENTURE segment with the lemmings going over the cliff.

I showed one of the Gobelins CGI shorts, too, but I don't know the name of it. It's the one with the little old ladies making pastries and going over the cliff...

Oh yeah, I've heard of that one. I might have that on tape too. Amazing what the studio had to do to pepetuate a myth so well-crafted like that!

I think I have that on my harddrive already!

I personally also liked another film they've done called "Le Building"....
http://www.le-building.com/

There's a vid elsewhere on the net that showed how they did some of the CGI elements in the film, including a pizza delivery motocyclist who was all CGI while most other characters were still hand-drawn.

Most of what Gobelins' work so far represented on the net have been "signal films" produced individually for the Annecy International Animation Festival held annually in Annecy, France (whom I think started Gobelins in the process). They acted as sorta bridging sequences inbetween films I believe. Some of those films can be accessed here...

(scroll down the bottom a bit to see those)

Read some blurb elsewhere the tuition at Gobelins is WAY cheaper than those of CalArts or Rhode Island School of Design.

I'm sorry it took so long to find it, but I finally got it hosted. You can download Disney's VD ATTACK PLAN at http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1GP5B68V

It's a big file (160mb) so you may wanna download it while you sleep. I'll post it as the HELL Clip of the Month later in the week...

I wouldn't mind waiting. I'm about to go to bed anyway, and I have something else to do on the PC as well (ripping a DVD to DivX). Should get it by the morning. :)]

(would take me that long though I bet to put a file up that big!)

I couldn't think of any other way to do it. Well, any cheap way of hosting it. I'm thinking about getting a paid Progiem account for bigger files...

Well, thanks for the file none the less! Too me a little over an hour to get it all, but it was worth it!

Amazing what Disney could do when it doesn't have to do the usual squeaky-clean fare.
