I've seen similar incidences in local TV too, of course these days you don't have local station using booms at all really (though I recall it always being weird when they try to use lavalieres in much the same way). Thank goodness for wireless these days.
The problem with kazoos is that the sound doesn't carry very far. When we had a volunteer kazoo orchestra at the show I couldn't hear them very well from where I was. Although I admit I have ear damage.
I had to double check to make sure that clip was from the Mike Douglas Show. I get him confused with Merv Griffin.
