Glad to see you've discovered these people!

I've actually knew of their intentions last year as they contacted me directly about obtaining an English version of several Toei animated flicks they're releaseing as well. I submitted them a copy of "Animal Treasure Island" that was from a tape I got from Dave Merrill years earlier, though one of the guys operating this venture wishes he had a decent copy to use on 16mm. I also sent him a copy of "Taro the Dragon Boy"n (from the "Magic Window" video series), for which he states his company will release later this year.

I had to keep it a secret from everybody, even a close friend of mine who'se NUTS over the live-action Lupin III flick he had to download from a P2P group.

I don't remember what blog I found the link at, but I've been waiting impatiently for Discotek Media to release a DVD for at least a month or more. Then I figured, to heck with it, I'll post the links to the trailers. Which is all that seems to be on the Discotek Media site. They really need somebody to go in and build them a better website, I'd do it for trade.

The Zero Woman trailer makes me wanna go out and find the DVD. I liked the Media Blasters Zero Woman videos that came out years ago. I didn't realise it went all the way back to 1974.

Dave mentions the three anime movies that are scheduled for release on his LiveJournal, I guess they e-mailed him their press release. Strange that I never get any PR to post on the AnimeHELL site...

Interesting to hear that.

Personally, the three movies slated for release by Discotek include "Animal Treasure Island", "Taro the Dragon Boy" and "Puss 'n Boots". I'm only surprised they're going after these classics from Toei's glory days, stating they would try to offer them with both English and Japanese audio tracks, though Toei doesn't have the English versions of the audio to send them, so they were asking me if I could supply that or such.

Do you know if they got the rights to all the Puss In Boots movies? I'd be interested in all of 'em.

I'd love to see all the classic Toei Festival of Animation movies given an R1 release, with or without an english soundtrack...

I believe they only got the rights to the first film (1969). Would've been nice if they had the other two, but perhaps there's always an option for them later if the first wave prove to be successful. Kindal ike to see them release "Great Adventure of Hols, Prince of the Sun" and "Flying Ghost Ship" while they're at it!

And Jack and The Witch and The Adventures of Gulliver Beyond the Moon...

I even suggested they'd use a clever umbrella title for the sets under a name like "Toei Anime Classics", perhaps shown as a ribbon looped around the familiar Pero logo or such. Had it also in mind to design the logo for "Animal Teasure Island" to have the "anime" written in a "furry/anthro" sorta way, while "Treasure Island" would be in a more profound font, like what you could expect in a usual adapation of a novel.

I only hope these discs will be released soon, I'm still glad to think someone out there will finally bring those obscure classics to DVD (instead of having to buy them via import venues).

Another one of my classic Japanese animated flicks of old, "Jack & The Beanstalk" (directed by Gisaburo Sugii), has been released on DVD a few months ago by Hen's Tooth Video (home to a lot of old school titles).

A friend I know up in Michigan is currently releasing DVDs of classic cartoons set in their proper context, including a disc on Popeye, another one of a mixture of different studio work of the 1930s, and is currently working on a disc of WWII material (currently tracking down a copy of the Momotaro film to include).

Here's an interview about that.

He has already found a distributor for several of his DVDs so far (so he won't have to burn DVD-R's anymore)..

I wish I knew more how to help these companies out. I'd love to start up my own distribution biz that could sell thes labels or other such obscure, niche items I believe there's a big enough audience for.

Hey, he's got the Ali SUPERFIGHT! I've got the trailer for that. These DVDs look nice, lots of extras for the price. I'll have to buy a disc or two from him...
